NuCalm is revolutionising the patient experience by naturally relaxing the body within minutes. Developed by American neuroscientists, it induces a state of deep relaxation even in anxious patients.
Using a system known as cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES), NuCalm consists of a generator and a headset that transmits relaxing electrical and sound frequencies to the brain. After about five minutes, brain waves have been shown to slow to a state that is associated with deep relaxation, meditation and sleep.
Patients are also asked to wear dark glasses and are given plant based tablets of a brain chemical called GABA – commonly available as a nutritional supplement – both of which deepen the calming effect.

James Goolnik, founder of Bow Lane Dental has just won the prestigious accolade of the fourth most influential person on dentistry for 2010, in the Dentistry top 50.
The article reads:
Our highest new entry for this year is James Goolnik, who was recently elected president of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD).
James qualified from Kings College in 1992 and has worked in the city of London since 1995. He has a masters degree in Conservative Dentistry from the Eastman Dental Institute and now practises all aspects of cosmetic dentistry with his multi-specialist team at Bow Lane Dental Group, where he is the principal and owner. The award-winning private practice has its own on-site dedicated dental laboratory.
He is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Association of Dental Implantology, the British Society Of Occlusal Studies and the British Dental Association. He is on the board of the British Dental Bleaching Society and trains members of the dental team in tooth whitening through his company Smiles by James.
James lectures internationally on the subjects of tooth whitening techniques, minimal invasive dentistry and marketing your practice. His profile is such that he is recognised as a top cosmetic dentist and writes for several magazines including Maxim, and has also been interviewed on many television and radio programmes.
In his new role at the BACD he plans to widen the scope and influence of the Academy, forging relationships with the entire dental community, not just in the cosmetic dental arena.

Time, smoking, tea and coffee are just a few of the things that cause your teeth to yellow and discolour. Whitening uses oxygenating agents (mainly hydrogen peroxide) on stains by converting coloured material into non-coloured material by oxidation.
Whiter teeth can take years off your appearance. The effects can last up to ten years depending on whether or not you smoke or how much tea, coffee and red wine you drink.
In a British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) survey carried out in 2006, teeth whitening was found to be the most popular cosmetic dental treatment (31%), with women aged 25-34 being most likely to have undergone teeth whitening.
The market has grown due to a higher media profile fuelled by celebrity and makeover programmes. Tooth whitening is a quick and cheap way to dramatically improve someone’s appearance. Society has also made it more acceptable for men to look after their appearance with cosmetic ranges just developed for men and the male market for cosmetic dentistry is also expanding.
The only difference in the hundreds of dentist prescribed systems out there is the concentration of the oxygenating agent and the way the solution is applied to your teeth. There are two main ways of carrying out tooth whitening:
The advantages of tooth whitening are that it is a quick safe, painless procedure that brings back the natural colour of the teeth with no structural change. Patients should be aware that it will not whiten fillings or crowns and that the procedure will only produce a natural whiteness. If they are seeking a radiator-white smile then they may need to consider other options such as porcelain veneers. Patients should also be warned that the whitening process causes transient sensitivity.
Safety -peroxide based whiteners cause no structural change in your teeth and are completley safe if dentist prescribed and admistered.
There is no evidence that whitening toothpastes can actually whiten your teeth. Some of those bought abroad, can actually harm your teeth as they contain acids/abrasives that can cause permanent damage. The most effective product purchased over the counter to whiten teeth is Crest White strips and at present they are only available in the USA.
