Simple sugars such as Sucrose which are commonly found in soft drinks and sweets are most commonly associated with the build up of plaque and tartar. The frequency with which simple sugars are consumed is directly related to the rate of dental cavity occurance.
More complex sugars such as those found in bread and potatoes have a detrimental effect, but not to the degree of simple sugars.
Acids contained in fruit juice, vinegar and soft drinks lower the pH level of the oral cavity which in turn causes the enamel to demineralise. Remineralisation can occur by limiting the amount and frequency of acidic products, allowing the oral cavities to repair themselves.
