Crooked teeth

Why you may have crooked teeth and why fixing them may be easier than you think.

In a perfect mouth, teeth are fully aligned, without gaps, twists or overlaps; resulting in a beautifully symmetrical smile. However, many of us have crooked teeth causing embarrassment every time we part our lips. Furthermore, crooked teeth can cause dental health problems, adding to their general discomfort. Luckily, straightening crooked teeth has become less visible and more comfortable over the years, reducing the impact of treatments on our busy social lives.

What causes crooked teeth?

Some people are born with crooked teeth; others get them later on in life. Here are some of the causes of crooked teeth:

  • The premature loss of milk teeth
  • Thumb sucking
  • Issues with wisdom teeth
  • Hereditary factors
  • Having a mouth that is too small for all your teeth
  • Different-sized or malformed upper and lower jaws
  • Improperly fitted fillings or crowns
  • Gingivitis (gum disease)

How to straighten crooked teeth

At Bow Lane Dental, we have several treatments available to straighten your crooked teeth, virtually invisibly. All of these treatments start with a 30 minute consultation to determine which one is right for you. In some cases, we can fix crooked teeth in as little as SIX weeks!

  • Invisalign can straighten crooked teeth in 12 to 24 months, using a set of custom-made and nearly invisible aligners. Because the aligners are clear and removable, this flexible method is very popular with those who attend many social functions.
  • Also removable, the Inman Aligner tackles only front crooked teeth, but sees faster results in as little as six weeks. If suitable, this treatment works well for adult relapses and for those seeking a quick and cost-effective solution.
  • Tooth coloured braces are sometimes a better solution for more severely crooked teeth, with treatment varying between nine and 24 months. Made of tooth coloured ceramic brackets, these fixed braces are virtually invisible and much less intrusive than the old ‘metal mouth’ braces.
  • Lingual braces can also treat more severe cases of crooked teeth and because they are fixed to the backs of the teeth, they are completely invisible. Treatment can take anywhere between three to 24 months.

Why crooked teeth should be fixed

Apart from affecting your smile and therefore your self esteem, crooked teeth can cause other problems:

  • Difficulty with chewing
  • Difficulty with cleaning the teeth, thus increasing the risk of decay, gum disease and cavities
  • Excessive wearing of the teeth due to misalignment
