Before we discuss your options, let’s bust some teeth whitening myths

There are so many myths when it comes to whitening your teeth. Many people suggest natural methods are better, but are you doing your teeth more harm than good? Here’s what we get asked the most…

1. Do teeth whitening treatments destroy your teeth?

Answer: The simple answer is no. Teeth whitening does not destroy your teeth or enamel. Most teeth whitening gels contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is popular for its effective whitening capabilities and breaks down into water and urea.  Both do not cause damage to your teeth.

2. If I rub acidic fruits such as strawberries on my teeth, will they whiten naturally?

Answer: False. Many people search online for ‘whiten teeth with strawberries’ or ‘what fruits whiten my teeth’, but the truth is, their acidic and abrasive nature can increase your risk of cavities or tooth sensitivity. While eating fruit is good for your health, you should never allow acidic fruit juice to sit on your teeth for long periods of time. We strongly suggest avoiding this method, because once enamel has worn away, it cannot come back.

3. Does brushing with baking soda whiten your teeth?

A lot of people ask ‘Does baking soda whiten teeth?’

Answer: False. Brushing your teeth with baking soda is not an effective way to whiten your teeth. It is abrasive and can actually cause your tooth enamel to erode (wear away) over time.

4. Does coconut oil pulling whiten teeth?

Answer: False. There is actually no scientific proof that coconut oil pulling makes a difference to the colour of your teeth. As much as we love beautiful white smiles, there have been no studies proving this claim. We suggest opting for professional teeth whitening to achieve your dream pearly whites. A lot of people ask ‘What do dentists use to whiten teeth?’. There are lots of options, including home whitening. Our home teeth whitening uses custom-made, thin clear guards which are supplied with and are designed to hold a tooth whitening gel to whiten your teeth at home. These trays, one for your top teeth and one for your bottom teeth, are made in our in-house laboratory from moulds of your teeth.

Zoom teeth whitening is the latest method to whiten your smile. Using the power of laser, this method can lighten your teeth by 8-10 shades, with less sensitivity than other teeth bleaching methods. Opalescence Go

Opalescence

It’s fast, effective and easy-to-use. Opalescence Go is a pre-filled whitening tray that conforms to all mouth shapes thanks to its UltraFit technology. There’s no need for impressions or moulds, just pick one up at our practice and go. The whitening system is also vegan friendly, gluten-free and ready to use straight out of the box. Just wear for 30 minutes once a day for 14 days. The Opalescence Go treatment costs £150.

Internal bleaching

A dead or non-vital tooth often discolours. This can happen from trauma or deep decay and can happen slowly over a number of years.

Internal tooth whitening or non-vital bleaching is when peroxide gel is placed inside a tooth and it can whiten from the inside out. This technique is also known as the walking bleach technique. You can find out more about internal bleaching by clicking here.
