Prevent gum disease

Gum disease and tooth decay is the most common global disease affecting every family. Over 80% of cavities occur inside pits and fissures on chewing surfaces where brushing cannot reach food left trapped after every meal or snack and saliva or fluoride have no access to neutralise acid and re-mineralise demineralised tooth. This is why regular appointments with one of our dental hygienists in London are so beneficial; our hygienists can reach all the places that the common toothbrush cannot!

What to expect

We provide dental hygiene appointments with our experienced dental hygienists in our London practice to fully clean your teeth and gums and advice on your daily dental hygiene routine. Our dental hygiene appointments provide:

Scaling & polishing

to remove all plaque and calculus with a variety of the latest equipment including the latest air polishing which fires a jet of air, water and sodium bicarbonate at your teeth to remove debris and polish the surface.

Dental hygiene advice

to ensure you can maintain those areas visibly accessible on a day to day basis in between dental hygiene appointments and ensure long term problems caused by poor dental hygiene remain at bay.

Our dental hygienists can help with halitosis treatment too at our London clinic, which can often be the result of poor dental hygiene.

Dental Hygienist London FAQs

How often do i need to see a dental hygienist?

Arrow Down (grey) thin | Bow Lane Dental in London

There isn’t just one answer to this question - it depends on your oral health and risk levels.

We recommend that most patients visit every six months, in between their regular dental check-ups.You may need to visit more frequently if:

You have gum disease – patients with active gum disease need monitoring and more frequent treatment to keep their condition under control, so will usually need to see a hygienist every three months or so.

You have bad breath – most people, at some point or other, will experience bad breath. It can usually be resolved by sticking to a good at-home oral hygiene routine (brushing and flossing twice every day) but if the problem persists, you may need to see a hygienist so that they can investigate, diagnose and treat it.

You smoke – smokers are more at risk of developing oral infections, which is why if you’re a regular heavy smoker, you need to see a hygienist more frequently to identify any causes for concern.

You’re currently pregnant – all the hormone changes that occur during pregnancy can affect your oral health and it’s common for pregnant women to experience problems like red, inflamed, and/or bleeding gums. It’s recommended that you visit the hygienist more frequently during pregnancy to keep an eye on these issues.

What are the benefits of seeing a dental hygienist in london?

Arrow Down (grey) thin | Bow Lane Dental in London

There are many advantages to seeing a dental hygienist regularly.

Not only will frequent visits to a hygienist improve your gum health and banish bad breath, but it will also help to boost your smile and confidence.

Your dental hygienist will perform a simple scale and polish to eliminate plaque build-ups on the surfaces of the teeth and around the gum line, and offer advice on how to maintain your oral health at home. When your oral health is on top, so is your self-esteem.

As well as helping you feel better about showing off your smile, attending regular appointments with a hygienist will also reduce your risk of developing conditions such as gum disease, so you won’t need to see your dentist as regularly if your oral health is in check.

If you’re anxious about coming in for a scale and polish, be sure to let us know before your appointment.

We offer nitrous oxide - a mild sedation to help you relax during treatment. We’ll talk you through the process and do everything we can to make you feel as comfortable as possible.
