Most people strive for perfection when it comes to their smile. We want our teeth white, straight and smooth, but the years can do damage to our teeth that simply can’t be reversed by brushing, no matter how dedicated your dental regimen. Your teeth can be impacted by everything from unconscious nighttime grinding to your beverage of choice – red wine, coffee and tea are the usual suspects! No matter what damage time and everyday habits have done to your teeth, there is a way to obtain a perfect grin; through a carefully selected cosmetic dentist.
Selecting the right dentist is simply not as easy as picking a name from a phone-book. You owe it to yourself to do your homework and find the right cosmetic dentist to suit you and your needs. Remember that many dental procedures are not reversible. As such, you should be completely confident in the dentist you have picked. Pick the right dentist and they will be able to give you long-lasting, minimally invasive and natural smile.
Your dentist should be affiliated with either the British Association of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) or the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). These are the two most well-known organisations for cosmetic dentistry. A full membership with either organisation demonstrates that your dentist is passionate about cosmetic dentistry and that they are up-to-date on current best practice in the field of cosmetic dentistry.Visit your dentist’s website; if they are an active member of the BACD or any other association, you will be able to find this information. Search their ‘About’ or ‘Team’ page. If all else fails, give them a call and ask the practice personally.
It is important, for your comfort, to look for a surgeon who has been practicing cosmetic surgery for a long time. As with any other skill, the longer you practice, the more honed you will be; this is no less true with regards to cosmetic surgery. This information shouldn’t be difficult to uncover, particularly if the dentist in question is proud about their extensive experience and their long list of happy patients. Remember, cosmetic dentistry is an art – don’t settle for a generalised dentist who has had little to no experience in cosmetic dentistry.
If your cosmetic dentist has produced beautiful results, he or she will be eager to show you what they can offer. They will be happy to give you evidence of their past procedures, including before-and-after photos. Similarly, as a means of evaluating their performance, take note of testimonials from other patients. They will be able to tell you if the dentist in question was helpful, confident and comforting.
Ask questions about the technology that will be used. How extensive is it? Do they offer study models, imaging technology and bonding previews when recommending and demonstrating procedure options? Do they have a dental laboratory on site and can you meet the technician that will be designing your smile? A good practitioner knows the benefits of advanced technological equipment, and will be happy to discuss these with you.
