Mouth Cancer Action Month is officially upon us, and this is an initiative we have…
Mouth ulcers are very common and can be triggered by stress. The most important thing is to keep your mouth very clean and not to touch them with your fingers. Maintaining good oral hygiene and use of an antiseptic mouthwash or spray (e.g. chlorhexidine) can prevent secondary infection and, therefore, slow healing. They can be caused by braces, rough teeth or fillings or ill fitting dentures. Also cuts or burns while eating or drinking e.g. hard food or hot drinks.
Certain components of ordinary toothpastes can trigger mouth ulcers. SLS, short for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. This detergent does not actually clean teeth- its sole purpose is to produce foam and thicken the toothpaste. It gives the impression of cleaning you teeth but actually doesn’t. SLS has been shown to increase your risk of developing mouth ulcers and that is why we advise to find a toothpaste that is SLS free especially if you are prone to mouth ulcers.
It is all too easy to neglect your dental appointments. Is it really that long since I last saw my dentist? Unfortunately there is no quick fix for mouth ulcers, and they will need time to heal.
We also recommend trying a medicated oral gel to treat your mouth ulcer. You can find a list of recommended gels below:
